Supporting Calm Birth, Your Way

A pregnant lady in a birthing pool

What is hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing uses antenatal education, self-hypnosis, relaxation and breathing techniques to help release any fear or tension you may have around birthing your baby.

Discover how the mind and body can work together to help you gain control over your own labour. These methods can be used to help you to achieve a calm, natural and often drug free birth.

Hypnobirthing can be used to achieve a positive birth experience in any setting; on labour ward, the birth centre or at a homebirth.

What does the course involve?

The course will be run by Midwives from the Abbey Birth Centre, and will be held at St Peter’s Hospital on a Thursday evening for 3 consecutive weeks, starting at 7pm with each session lasting two and a half hours. There will be a maximum of 7 couples in a session, and the course will cover a range of relaxation exercises, massage and practical skills for labour and birth.

We recommend joining the course from 28-34 weeks of pregnancy. This allows plenty to time to practice and get to grips with the breathing and relaxation techniques before your labour beings. The course costs £100 per couple, and payment can be made over the phone.
